Bariatric Surgery Support Groups
Doctor Support
If you are in need of support for your Bariatric surgery then the first place you should visit should be your doctor. Whether your support is due to emotional problems or to actual physical problems you are having in recovery there are a number of things your doctor needs to know. Supervision during the post-operation phase is vital and for that reason it is important that your doctor be your first line of contact when any problems crop up. If the nature of your support requirements is more personal than medical, then your doctor will most certainly have a list of bariatric weight loss surgery support groups in the area that they will be able to refer you to.
Support Groups
A support group is essentially a collection of people that are related to each other by a specific event or circumstance. For example, a cancer support group might contain people that have all suffered or had someone close to them suffer from cancer. A weight loss surgery support group will contain people that have either been through weight loss surgery already or alternatively will be considering the prospect of going through weight loss surgery. Surgery of any kind is a serious matter and having the advice and support of others that are in similar situations or have been there before has the ability to create a very powerful emotional safety net that can be vital in assisting a person’s recovery from bariatric weight loss surgery.
Finding a Support Group
There are many methods you can take to find yourself a support group. As previously mentioned, most doctors will keep lists of different local support groups as it is a query they receive quite frequently. In addition, a quick internet search for your topic should reveal a multitude of different websites that offer links and contact information for support groups in your area. Finally, if neither of these methods are particularly acceptable to you then there is always the phonebook that you can consult for information and contacts for weight loss support groups in your area. There is a wealth of information quite literally at your fingertips so be sure to take advantage of it.
Advantages of Support Groups
One of the biggest advantages of support groups is that they provide a comfortable and non-judgmental front for you to use as a sounding board. You can discuss your experiences with previous weight loss techniques, the effect that your excess weight has had on your life and even the experiences you have had with weight loss surgery. Support groups are there for just that; to provide support. They serve to create a very strong emotional safety net for the person that seeks them out.
