Yo yo diet is not some fancy diet that suggests playing yo yo will help you lose weight. Yo yo diet means someone follow a diet and successfully lose weight in a short period, then resume their old eating habit and gain back or even increase their weight. Yo yo diet also called weight cycling.
When you are on diet, your metabolism slow down because of limited calories intake. Once you resume your normal eating habit, your will gain weight faster than before. You don’t need as much calories as before because your metabolism is slower. The extra calories will turn in to fat and store in your body. That explain why many dieter fail and pack on more weight at the end.
Any diet that asks you to take a big cut on calories in a short period of time can easily turn in to yo yo diet. Skipping meal is the worst thing you can do because it has the most effect on your metabolism. Do not follow any diet plan which promises that you can lose more than 2 pound per week.
Some popular weight loss diet plans like cabbage soup diet, master cleanse or grapefruit/ fruit juice are the worst because of the dramatic calories cut. Any short term diet plan like 7 day diet or 3 day diet should also be avoided.
The only diet that works is a change of life style. You might be able to loss weight and stay off in a few months. However, you will bounce back if you stop dieting. A recent research found women that are frequently on yo yo diet ( if they gain/lose more than 10 pound for 10 or more time in their adulthood) are 2.5 time more likely to get kidney cancer than those who have stable weight (even if they are overweight).
If you really need to lose some weight in a short period of time, here are a few tips that can help you maintain your metabolism even if you are eating less.
Eat often like six times a day. Your metabolism will increase because of the constant food consumption.
Lift weight. More muscle = high metabolism.
Drink coffee or green tea to raise your metabolism.
Cut Crabs, eat more protein from lean mean or egg white.
Do not skip meal.
Limit your cardio session to 30 minute maximum.
Combine Aerobics and Weight Training to build muscle as well as cardiovascular health.
Hey, I was about 45 pounds overweight, then I got type 2 diabetes, pretty much got my act together overnight, after that…..NO MORE SUGAR, seriously, this works like a charm. cut out sugar and high and medium glycemic foods. Im sure we’ve heard it a thosand times but the weight will fall off within months, even without additional exercise.
Just have patience.
All the best. Dave
I completely agree with Dave. I’ve lost about 45 pounds in the last 2 months from less sugars and lower carbs. Got my diet diary at my site at saphrym.com too. I think it helps to keep me honest since so many people read it.

let me know how you feel about Abs diet
I recently did quite a bit of real world research in several gyms I consult at. I took some time and surveyed some of the nutritional clients, and there were several threads that were consistent throughout the people who had trouble not only losing weight, but keeping it off.
1) Yo yo dieting. The challenge with yo yo dieting is that people cut calories way too low, which does help you lose weight, but as you mentioned, lowers metabolism.
2) They weren’t strength training. Many people head for the treadmill or bike instead of hitting some bodyweight exercises or resistance exercises. This is a big mistake because adding muscle fiber and keeping it under tension is the backbone of your metabolism.
The muscle fiber is what actually expends calories. The more you have, the more you’ll burn.

Swiming worked wonders for me. 5 hours of swiming each week worked like crazy and I went to having muscle in under a month.
@Mike: “The muscle fiber is what actually expends calories. The more you have, the more you’ll burn. ”
yea, that’s why weight loss is an exponential thing.
